Join Echoes for a Netflix Watch Party!
Together we will watch the documentary Disclosure, to hear the history and lived experience of the transgender community. We will watch the film and then gather on zoom afterwards for a discussion.
DISCLOSURE is an unprecedented, eye-opening look at transgender depictions in film and television, revealing how Hollywood simultaneously reflects and manufactures our deepest anxieties about gender. Leading trans thinkers and creatives, including Laverne Cox, Lilly Wachowski, Yance Ford, Mj Rodriguez, Jamie Clayton, and Chaz Bono, share their reactions and resistance to some of Hollywood’s most beloved moments. Grappling with films like A Florida Enchantment (1914), Dog Day Afternoon, The Crying Game, and Boys Don’t Cry, and with shows like The Jeffersons, The L-Word, and Pose, they trace a history that is at once dehumanizing, yet also evolving, complex, and sometimes humorous. What emerges is a fascinating story of dynamic interplay between trans representation on screen, society’s beliefs, and the reality of trans lives. Reframing familiar scenes and iconic characters in a new light, director Sam Feder invites viewers to confront unexamined assumptions, and shows how what once captured the American imagination now elicit new feelings. Disclosure provokes a startling revolution in how we see and understand trans people.

If you haven't done a Netflix watch party yet, here are the steps:
NOTE: you need a netflix account. (there is a free trial if you'd like to start with that to check out netflix and not commit to monthly charges)
for netflix watch parties you need to use CHROME as the browser - it won't work on any other browser (i.e. Firefox, Safari, etc.)
you can only use a DESKTOP or LAPTOP for a netflix watch party (no smartphones or tablets)
you have to INSTALL the netflix party Chrome extension (https://www.netflixparty.com/#intro); once you do this you will see a gray "NP" next to the address bar in the Chrome browser.
because you can't schedule a netflix party in advance, one person has to get it going and then send out the link. We will get the movie started this Monday at 6:25ish, and then post the link to this event page, and the Echoes facebook page. Keep an eye out for it.
make sure you are on Chrome and signed into Netflix
Click on the URL link that I will post on this page, which will direct you to Netflix.
This is IMPORTANT: once you're at the link that I've sent out, you have to CLICK ON THE LITTLE "NP" BUTTON that is next to the address bar. (The "NP" should appear red and not gray.)
After all of this 😳, we should be watching at the same time, and we'll be able to use a chat feature to make comments to each other.
